Social Sciences University of Ankara (SSUA) School of Foreign Languages (SFL) Curriculum Development Office (CDO) is responsible for setting main objectives and sub-goals of English language education that consists of four different levels (A1, A2, B1, B2) by giving reference to GSE and CEFR standards and also making the necessary arrangements to achieve these objectives. These arrangements include (1) preparing weekly outlines for each level in which both aims and explanations regarding the weekly practices can be traced by instructors and, (2) choosing and preparing materials that will support English language education during the academic year.
In order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives, CDO;
- conducts regular need analyses in order to set the goals and sub-skills mentioned above,
- makes necessary arrangements in the weekly outlines accordingly,
- chooses and prepares educational materials.
- prepares materials supporting the program and ensures students get these materials
- follows the students' progress via the digital platforms on which students complete tasks assigned by the CDO,
- the unit also holds weekly meetings with the instructors teaching at different levels and exchanges information with other units via regular meetings. Through these meetings, CDO keeps informed about whether the aims and the practices settled before are achieved. CDO works in coordination especially with the Test Development Office in order to ensure the overlap of objectives and tests as assessment tools. With the help of these meetings, CDO also provides a smooth cognitive transition from one level to the other in terms of language skills and academic skills.
- at the end of each period, CDO gets feedback from both instructors and the students with respect to different aspects of the curriculum so that necessary improvements and arrangements are made.
Furthermore, CDO provides sources necessary for students to use English both in academic settings and in daily life. Besides receptive (Listening and Reading) and productive (Writing and Speaking) language skills, CDO arranges certain activities for students to practice the knowledge areas, vocabulary, and grammar.
