About us
ASBU Self-access center (SAC) is a learning space designed to help students become independent and competent language learners. With its printed and digital resources as well as its units designed for four skills, the center offers learning opportunities suitable for different English skills and levels.
Mission
ASBU Self-access center (SAC) aims to help students manage their language learning process by offering a well-designed program, variable resources, spaces designed to develop language ability in four skill domains (reading, listening, writing and speaking). It also aims to help ASBU students become independent learners who determine their language learning goals, manage language learning process and evaluate the learning process by choosing the right methods, techniques and materials suitable for the set goals.
ASBÜ SAC has two main roles:
1. It helps students develop independent language learning skills.
2. It extends language learning beyond the traditional classroom setting, so as to increase the amount of exposure to and interaction in English.

Self-access Center Services
The services in ASBÜ Self-access Center are offered by teacher or student moderator as 45-min sessions. The information (session name, time and venue) about SAC sessions can be found on weekly schedule published by the coordinator.
Writing Center
The center helps students develop writing techniques that will ultimately help them to become an autonomous writer. They can receive advice from the teacher about the best ways in which to develop certain aspects of your writing process, such as organizing ideas or punctuation. During a one-to-one writing session, students can determine the areas that require the most attention or consult with a tutor to improve your writing:

- Organization (Introductory, Body and Conclusion Paragraphs)
- Spelling & Punctuation
- Grammar
- Vocabulary Use
- Coherence & Cohesion
- Transitions
Conversation Club
Conversation club is an activity organized to improve students’ communication skills in English. ASBU Students can improve their listening and speaking skills by joining these clubs, which are moderated by teachers whose native language is English. A maximum of 8 people can attend the session so that every participant has the opportunity to share their own ideas and meet new people.
Workshops and Presentations
Workshops organized by ASBU Self-access Center provide practical information that students can use in daily life to improve their independent learning skills. Seminars organized by the center can be gathered under four headings:
- Workshops related to language learning strategies
- Workshops related to useful resources for self-study
- Workshops related to language skills
- Workshops related to exams strategies
Student Language Clubs
Self-access Center student clubs were established to enable students with a common academic goal to learn with and from each other. SAC users are encouraged to create their own social community groups according to their common social interest and academic goals, and to organize language clubs and work with their peers. SAC student clubs are as follows:

- Exam oriented listening study group
- Ted talk group
- TOEFL study group
Cultural events
ASBÜ Self-access Center informs students by organizing seminars and events about second foreign language cultures including Chinese and German, as well as English.
Competitions
ASBÜ Self-access Center provides a social environment that motivates students and facilitates the development of fluency and confidence in language. It organizes extra-curricular activities and competitions that encourage students to use English outside of the classroom.

ASBÜ Self-access Center offers a variety of digital and published resources. The resources in the center are categorized according to their type and proficiency level in consideration of student needs and accessibility.
