The self-access center (SAC) of the School of Foreign Languages offers a colorful and stress-free environment in which students practice Arabic through a variety of materials and activities with/without the guidance of a teacher. SAC is an Arabic-only space where students are exposed to Arabic in multiple ways. The primary aim of SAC is to extend Arabic language learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. SAC at SSUA has two missions. That unit helps students develop both independent learning skills (learner autonomy) and language ability in four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). In order to ensure students acquire independent learning skills, SAC offers regular workshops on self-study skills and shares information about useful websites and online applications. In addition, SAC publishes a bimonthly newsletter containing tips about autonomous learning and useful strategies for learning Arabic beyond the classroom. Moreover, SAC offers extracurricular activities and Arabic-language clubs and organizes cultural events and competitions that encourage students to practice Arabic outside the classroom.
SAC has the following units:
1. Lounge: This unit has group-study desks and a library of readers, resources, and
dictionaries.
2. Reading Corner: This unit is a comfortable environment in which students can read
English-language newspapers, magazines, and readers.
3. Speaking Corner: Students can participate in a conversation club moderated by a
native teacher. Each conversation club topic is determined in advance.
4. Computer Lab: Students improve their listening skills by listening to podcasts,
American/British TV series, and audiobooks. The Lab also provides access to digital
materials for practicing grammar and vocabulary.
5. Materials Section: This unit offers printed materials with different levels and skills
designed by our instructors.
6. Club Corner: A place for playing board games and drama-based activities.
