French (Français), a Romance language in the Indo-European language family, is a language spoken by nearly 274 million people around the world. French, similar to Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, and Romanian, is a descendant of Latin, the official language of the Roman Empire. Following Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, and Arabic, it is ranked among the most widely spoken languages in the world. Additionally, French is one of the two languages, besides English, which is spoken on all the continents and ranks as the second most popular foreign language, yet again second to English.
