The primary goal of ESP courses is to satisfy the target needs of students studying in different departments in terms of their English language skills. Moreover, another basic purpose is to support students with respect to their English language needs in the academic environment. In order to achieve this, the flow of the programs is organized considering the topics which constitute the core of their field of study.
ENG 106 (English for Literature)
English for Literature is an elective ESP course for freshman and sophomore English Language and Literature students. The primary aim is to enable the students to use high-order thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and evaluation along with the two productive skills, speaking and writing. This course helps students express themselves more effectively and develop their critical thinking skills by building a connection between different literary and academic sources. Thus, they produce written pieces and oral expressions. This course adopts the eclectic method along with interactive methods and enables the students to make presentations, and write opinion-based and comparative essays.
ENG 103 (English for Economics I)
This is an elective ESP course that is offered during the fall semester for freshman and sophomore economics students. Economics students will be able to develop the four language skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as practice basic knowledge areas, vocabulary, and grammar in order to satisfy their target needs. Students will be able to internalize the key concepts relevant to today’s business environment via the use of authentic materials related to business and economics. Another primary aim of the course is to provide the students with an academic atmosphere in which the communication and presentation skills necessary for success in business world can be developed. Moreover, enabling economics students to gain self-confidence by equipping them with the language skills necessary for their business life is one of the significant effective goals of ENG 103.
ENG 104 (English for Economics II)
This is an elective ESP course that is offered during the spring semester for freshman and sophomore economics students. Economics students will be able to develop the four language skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as practice basic knowledge areas, vocabulary, and grammar in order to satisfy their target needs. Students will be able to internalize the key concepts related to today’s business environment via the use of authentic materials related to a variety of economics and business topics. Another primary aim of the course is to provide an academic atmosphere in which the communication and presentation skills necessary for success in the business world can be developed. Thus, students will be able to develop not only such target skills as crisis management and writing meeting minutes, faxes, memoranda, e-mails, short reports, business letters, CV and cover letter but also the ability to ask and answer questions, make convincing and informative speeches and presentations, which constitute the core requirement for BEC (Business English Certificate), an international certificate. Moreover, enabling economics students to gain self-confidence by equipping them with language skills necessary for their business life is one of the significant effective goals of ENG 104.
ENG 109 (English for Business I)
This is an elective ESP course that is offered during the fall semester for freshman and sophomore business students. Business students will be able to develop the four language skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as practice basic knowledge areas, vocabulary, and grammar in order to satisfy their target needs.
