Two English for Academic Purposes courses (ENG 101, ENG 102) are compulsory for all students of all departments of the SSUA.

ENG 101 (Academic Reading and Writing)

This course is designed to focus on higher B2 and above English grammar and academic vocabulary knowledge along with intensive academic reading and writing skills. The programme starts with theme-based activities, recognizing and understanding the field and moving towards higher-order thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. In order to develop these skills, academic and authentic materials primarily compiled from the area of Social Sciences  (academic articles, extracts from books, etc.) and supplementary materials are used. This course equips the students with the skills of avoiding plagiarism, giving references to sources, reading critically, responding to texts they read in written form, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating the information, developing original and coherent arguments and writing an extended essay based on research using academic sources.

ENG 102 (Academic Presentations) 

This course is designed to focus on higher B2 and above English grammar and academic vocabulary knowledge along with intensive academic listening and speaking skills. The programme is composed of theme-based activities including higher-order thinking skills starting from recognizing and understanding the field and moving towards analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Materials used in the course are enhanced through Social Sciences content. Students focus on effective listening techniques and sub-skills for discussion and making presentations. Assessment is composed of quizzes and discussions and presentations by students.
